CSX’s Greenbrier plans to lay off 650 employees

According to AP, Forbes: “The Greenbrier resort is furloughing nearly half its 1,350 employees as it struggles with a poor economy.”
“The resort recorded a loss of $35 million last year due to cancelations and a nearly yearlong labor dispute.”

  1. I have been laid off now for nearly 12 months. I am in college changing my career to the health service. It seems to me this is the only area that is recession proof !

  2. I’m getting laid off the 19th of January. I just wonder about the “$35 million” the hotel lost. I believe that we made money, but we didn’t make the money we were projected to. Seeing as how this was supposed to be our record busiest season, but a lot of cancellations took place both due to the slacking economy and labor negotiations, we lost potential monies, not actual money. Nice excuse though. Just come to an agreement already! You’re juggling with the lives of real human beings here, not just money. And also, what about the WARN act? Aren’t employees supposed to be given sufficient notice before a layoff occurs? Like 60 days? Too bad we didnt find out until two and a half weeks ahead of time. Something isn’t right.
