IBM Offers To Move Laid Off Workers To India

The climate is warm, there’s no shortage of exotic food, and the cost of living is rock bottom. That’s IBM’s pitch to the laid-off American workers it’s offering to place in India. The catch: Wages in the country are pennies-on-the-dollar compared to U.S. salaries.

Under a program called Project Match, IBM will help workers laid off from domestic sites obtain travel and visa assistance for countries in which Big Blue has openings. Mostly that’s developing markets like India, China, and Brazil.

  1. I feel strangely reminded of one Epksode of 30 days where they sent a US worker to work at a call center in India. What a joke. I am sure the wife and children will be thrilled. Why not move management to India for pennies on the grand.

  2. They should send the people that they hired from those countries into US positions back to company jobs in their country of origin. Many intend to retire there anyway; even though many individuals gain US citizenship that is only to be able to claim Social Security benefits. There are many from India who use the equivalent of dual citizenship – PIO and OCI – to keep their ties to India strong. Anyone who holds one of these is suspect; they have not renounced their allegiance to a foreign government. Few of their children even if US born serve in the US military. The US job is viewed simply as a way to make a lot more money than they could have in their home countries. Then there are the others that should be feared; an Asian engineering graduate student stated to a friend that “We’ve come for your women and your land.”.

    I fear for the future.

  4. lol of the day:
“… Then there are the others that should be feared; an Asian engineering graduate student stated to a friend that ‘We’ve come for your women and your land.’.”

I believe that was what the Native American Indians said about the Colonial Americans. But seriously, when was the last time you see an Asian engineer with a girl? Pretty low chance. An American girl? Below 0.01%. A good looking American girl? 0.00001%. Pure xenophobia.

Anyways, this tactic makes things pretty clear. IBM is trying to keep the low wage workers from India, and forced out higher paid local workers to cut cost.

  5. Today we wonder where all of our jobs of gone (out sourcing), consider re-reading the aforementioned paragraph and contemplate what the answer could possibly be?

Now China has decided it needs to shift gears from being an exporter of inexpensive, commercial products to more a higher level of manufactured goods requiring advanced technology.

  6. “…Many intend to retire there anyway; even though many individuals gain US citizenship that is only to be able to claim Social Security benefits”.

They do not intend to claim. They pay taxes like regular Americans and the Constitution of the US gives them the benefit. When you accrue sufficient points(by paying your share), you become eligible for social security. By the way, the entire social security is in a mess and most foreign workers are paying for your lazy ancestors while not being absolutely sure that the social security will be in a good shape for them to claim benefit when they retire. Asians(and Indians) are hard working people willing to work for a competitive (read “minimal wage” by the Americans) salaries and make a living.

“..The US job is viewed simply as a way to make a lot more money than they could have in their home countries”.
    – Very true. Every human being endaevors to work and make a living for his/her family and if the opportunity presents itself, yes, travel to foreign land and render their skills/services in retrun for competitive remuneration.Isn’t that the whole premise of global economy (for which america is a strong proponent).

It will serve well if an Average Americam decides to shrug off his laziness, get educated(college level education), forego greed (Madoffs and the Corporate Banks kind of greed), learn to live within his means(and not buy houses that he can’t dream to afford) and save for the future(like most Asians do) instead of sitting oh his/her lazy back side and expect the government to provide welfare and crib about the foreign workers.

Wise up people! If you have to go, do go..India or China or Brazil ain’t that bad.

  7. I am sick and tired of smug jerks like SG who paint all Americans as lazy and greedy. I have worked hard all my life, put myself through college, served in the military, have never taken welfare or unemployment insurance, and I live within my means in a modest house. Who the hell is SG to judge us all because of the greedy few who have plunged us all into misery? SG you will be the next one to lose your job- let’s see how much preaching you do after that.
