Amazon to Close Three Distribution Centers

Over the next two months, the online retailer, Amazon.com, will close 3 distribution centers: in Red Rock, Nev.; Munster, Ind.; and Chambersburg, Pa. The 210 employees in those three facilities were informed Wednesday. They will get severance packages and an opportunity to transfer to other Amazon shipping locations.

The Gazette Co. in Iowa to cut 100 jobs

The Gazette Co., which includes Gazette Communications, The Gazette newspaper and KCRG-TV, announced that it is eliminating about 100 jobs as part of a companywide reorganization.

In a separate blog, Gazette Editor Steve Buttry said he laid off 13 people Tuesday. The company employed 600 people at the time of last year’s flooding.

San Francisco Chronicle to cut jobs, might close

According to Reuters: “Hearst Corp will lay off a “significant” number of jobs at the money-losing San Francisco Chronicle, and may shut the daily paper if it cannot cut costs within weeks.”

The paper employs 275 news staff. It is unknown how many employees it has in total. The paper is the 12th largest in the United States, according to the U.S. Audit Bureau of Circulations

McClatchy to freeze pensions, suspend 401(k) match, cut jobs

Sacramento-based McClatchy, publisher of The Sacramento Bee and 29 other daily newspapers, on the heels of a $21.7 million loss for the fourth quarter, including frozen pension plans and the suspension of matching funds to its 401(k) retirements plans, the company

Sacramento Bee publisher and president Cheryl Dell said the paper will be making additional expense reductions, including eliminating some jobs.

Borders cuts management positions to trim costs

According to Reuters, CNBC: “Struggling book seller Borders Group Inc said on Tuesday it was consolidating its corporate management structure at the vice president and director levels, eliminating six vice president and 10 director positions. Borders said it cut the position of executive vice president of U.S.”

Barnes & Noble cuts nearly 100 corporate jobs

According to BusinessWeek: “Barnes & Noble Inc. said Wednesday that it has eliminated nearly 100 positions in its corporate headquarters as the bookseller attempts to reduce overhead costs due to the sharp downturn in retail sales.”

  • Barnes & Noble had 40,000 full-time and part-time employees as of Feb. 2, 2008, according to the company’s Web site

Meredith to cut 250 jobs, close magazine

According to AP, Forbes: “Meredith Corporation (NYSE:MDP) said Thursday it will eliminate 250 jobs and close its Country Home magazine in March as it suffers from sharp declines in publishing and broadcasting advertising amid the recession.”

McGraw-Hill Cuts 375 More Jobs

According to WSJ: “McGraw-Hill Cos. said it cut an additional 375 jobs during the fourth quarter, primarily in its education business, putting the year’s reduction at 1,045.”

  • McGraw-Hill said 215 of the fourth-quarter job cuts were in the education segment.
  • McGraw-Hill’s work force is about 21,000.
  • The latest reduction will result in a charge of $16.4 million, or five cents a share, for the period.
