Layoffs Hit Sony Pictures; Studio To Cut 300 Jobs

According to LA Times: “Sony (NYSE: SNE) Pictures has been slashing costs recently, but apparently it hasn’t been enough. The studio is planning to get rid of 300 positions, primarily because of weak DVD sales, the LA Times reported this morning.”

Sony said Thursday it plans to cut another 1,000 temporary workers in Japan and close one of two domestic TV plants.

Sony also will offer early retirement packages to its regular, full-time workers in an effort to cut 30 percent of its personnel costs in its TV business by March 2010. It refused to give a head count but said they are part of the 8,000 job cuts announced earlier, according to Yahoo Finance

Sony to Trim 8,000 Jobs and Reduce Investment

According to NYTimes: “Sony Corporation, said Tuesday that it would eliminate 8,000 jobs and rein in planned investment as it reacts to the global economic slowdown.”
“About 10 percent of the company’s 57 plants will be shut, including 2 overseas sites, and plans to expand a site in Slovakia where LCD televisions for the European market are assembled have been delayed. The statement did specify which plants will be closed.”
