Sun Microsystems Inc. officials confirmed Thursday that the networking and storage company has notified 1,300 employees they would be laid off as part of a previously announced workforce reduction.
The reductions stem from a Nov. 14 announcement of “a series of changes designed to align (Sun’s) cost model with the global economy and accelerate the introduction of compelling open source innovations,” spokeswoman Dana Lengkeek said in an e-mail Thursday.
The reductions were made across “all levels,” including vice presidents and directors, she said.

yes, it happened today. Somebody close to me got impacted. 9 years at Sun and was let go. No analysis of skills or what the brings to table, it is more of a question of you being a cell in spreadsheet. No grudges but why is CEO not punished but always people below.

#5 That’s a good point.
Sun Solaris? NetBeans? Java? You could have all these for free. What else?

Does it matter?
This turmoil leads to innovation. We all need to belive ourselves and get enterprising than complain.
No doubt it is hard for us, leave alone how hard it is for immigrants on a visa.
But friends, this is our country. We learn not to have attachments to companies. We need to innovate, think out-of-the-box and make every skill of ours count.

Did you dream this up sitting on the crapper, smoking a joint ? What’s “Brutal” is your ignorance of reality. Maybe you can afford to spew valley-speak buzzwords sipping your latte, but the rest of us have mortgages..

All the talk about Innovation, Vision, growth that the Sun senior management including the Board of directors do is bullshit. If a company is continuously laying off people from 2000 its shame on the part of CEO & Board.
The vision and plan is not really working. If other companies are laying off employees this year its because of the Economy which is understandable but Sun has laid off employees every year from 2000.
